The Delta State-Nigeria Erosion and Watershed Management Project (DTS-NEWMAP) is a World Bank Assisted intervention with counter-part funding from the Delta State Government. The project is being implemented by the State Project Management Unit (SPMU) under the Ministry of Environment. Global Peace Development was engaged as the focal NGO to ensure inclusive community participation for transparency and accountability of the intervention across the beneficiary communities.
Specifically, DTS-NEWMAP seeks to reduce the vulnerability to soil erosion in targeted sub-catchments while addressing the factors that contribute to gully erosion, flood menace and environmental challenges that contribute to exacerbate poverty among members of the affected communities whose sources of livelihood depend largely on arable land for agricultural activities.
The intervention is currently being implemented in five communities; Obomkpa and Ukwu-Nzu communities in Aniocha North LGA, Owanta community in Ika North East LGA, Jesse Town in Ethiope West LGA, and Ubulu-uku community in Aniocha South LGA.

NEWMAP VISIT TO OWANTA EROSION SITE
The participants gathered at the Land Office in Owanta where the team explained the purpose of the activity and how they intended to complete the task. The Community Association members then led the team to the worse hit areas where video documentaries of the increasing extent of the damage done to properties along the gully line were made. Affected persons were also interviewed.
Essentially, on investigation, the team discovered that in Owanta community more houses around the gully erosion have been destroyed and the occupants have evacuated..Read more

Nkwu Nzu Community
Participants converged at the Palace of the Obi of Ukwu-Nzu. The opening prayer was said by a volunteer and thereafter a formal introduction of each member of the project team to the community.
